ABOUT
THE CD-ROM, Wayfarer |
A lively, hands-on
introduction for teachers and scholars in the humanities and social
sciences, this book-and-CD package will inspire even the faint-hearted
to take the technological bull by the horns and make efficient,
informed use of computer and Internet resources. Combining interactive
projects in a CD-ROM format with informative printed essays, this
volume showcases innovations that are revolutionizing the craft
of scholarship--and examines realistically how applicable the new
technology is to learning.
The accompanying
CD features multimedia entries such as an interactive project on
owls that educates users about forest ecology; RiverWeb, an interactive
archive of information on the history, culture, and science of the
Mississippi River; and "Global Jukebox," which recreates
the context in which the folklorist Alan Lomax made his pioneering
field recordings. The CD includes links to many external sites on
the World Wide Web. For those with limited Internet access, a collection
of relevant sites is integrated into the CD.
Below,
you can sample the companion CD to Computing in the Social Sciences
and Humanities, including RiverWeb, an interactive website
included in its entirety on the disk.

- RiverWeb:
River Basin Knowledge Network interactive
website
Project RiverWeb
is a unique, multidisciplinary collaborative venture between the University
of Illinois Department of History, the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications (NCSA), and the Illinois State Museum (ISM), along with a
variety of other educational institutions and museums. It addresses the
need for creative integration of the latest information technology in
research and teaching built around the theme of river systems. Within
Project RiverWeb, we have developed the concept of "Landing Sites,"
discrete nodes focused on particular topics in a regional context, such
as the American Bottom, located along the Mississippi River in Illinois.
In the long run, RiverWeb will embrace many other Landing Sites.
The current projects demonstrate the historical and cultural components
of one region and should inspire others to develop their own community
studies as sites on the Web. This sampler represents the American Bottom
Landing Site. This region around St. Louis encompasses a detailed
chronicle of culture and history, beginning with Native American settlement.
Resources are especially sensitive to and inclusive of the influences
of race, gender, class, and regionalism on American culture and society,
influences both divisive and enriching.
